State Info
In Virginia, concealed carry of a firearm is legal for adults aged 21 and older who are allowed under state and federal law to possess a firearm and who have a state Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) or a valid permit from any other state. This extends to concealed carry in a private vehicle; without a permit, weapons must be secured in a closed container or compartment in the vehicle.
Permits
Virginia CHPs are issued by the state police department. CHPs may be issued to qualified residents and non-residents 21 years and older. Applicants must complete a state-approved firearms training course. Virginia has broad reciprocity with a majority of other states.
Magazine capacity limits
Virginia state law limits magazine capacity to no more than 20 rounds.
Other weapons
No weapons other than handguns are approved for concealed carry in Virginia.
Permitted non-lethal weapons include:
- Stun guns/tasers (some restrictions apply)
- Pepper spray
- Tear gas
- Bear spray (legal for self-defense against wildlife)
- Bludgeons/batons
- Brass knuckles (restrictions may apply)
- Less-lethal launchers
Duty to inform
Those who carry a weapon with a permit must be prepared to show the permit along with photo identification if asked by a member of law enforcement.
Employee parking lots
Employers generally may not prohibit employees from storing firearms or ammunition in a locked private vehicle.
