State Info
Texas is a constitutional carry state, which means law-abiding adults 21 years and older who can legally possess a firearm under federal and state law may carry a concealed handgun without obtaining a permit. This extends to carrying a weapon in a private vehicle, although the weapon must not be in plain view unless it is holstered and/or the carrier has a state permit or a permit from a state that has reciprocity with Texas.
Permits
Texas licenses to carry (LTCs) are not required but may be useful for reciprocity. Permits may be issued to qualified residents and non-residents 21 years and older. Applicants must complete a firearms training course prior to receiving a license. LTCs are issued by the state Department of Public Safety. Texas has broad reciprocity with most other states.
Other weapons
No weapons other than handguns are approved for concealed carry in Texas.
Permitted non-lethal weapons include:
- Stun guns/tasers
- Pepper spray
- Tear gas
- Bear spray (legal for self-defense against wildlife)
- Bludgeons/batons
- Brass knuckles
- Less-lethal launchers
Duty to inform
There is a duty to inform in Texas. Permit holders who are concealed carrying should be prepared to present their LTCs along with their drivers’ licenses when asked for identification by law enforcement.
Employee parking lots
Employers may not prohibit employees with LTCs from storing firearms or ammunition in locked private vehicles, as long as the vehicle is parked in a location where it is allowed to be.
