State Info
In New Mexico, concealed carry of a firearm is legal for adults aged 21 and older who are allowed under state and federal law to possess a firearm and who have a state concealed carry permit. Permit holders are entitled to carry only one concealed weapon at a time. If traveling in a private vehicle, any person age 19 or older may carry a firearm without a permit; however, non-permit holders are not allowed to exit a vehicle with a loaded concealed weapon.
Permits
Permits are open to qualified residents only and are issued by the Department of Public Safety. Applicants need to complete a handgun safety course that includes live-fire instruction. New Mexico has moderate reciprocity with other states, recognizing handgun permits from approximately 20 states as long as the permit holder is at least 21 years old.
Other weapons
No weapons other than handguns may be concealed carried in New Mexico even with a permit.
Permitted non-lethal weapons include:
- Stun guns/tasers
- Pepper spray
- Tear gas (with restrictions)
- Bear spray (legal for self-defense against wildlife only)
- Bludgeons/batons
- Brass knuckles
- Less-lethal launchers
