State Info
Mississippi is a constitutional carry state, which means law-abiding adults who can legally possess a firearm under federal and state law may carry a concealed handgun without obtaining a permit. The right extends to concealed carry in a private vehicle, as long as the weapon is sheathed in a holster, handbag, briefcase, or other fully enclosed case.
Permits
Permits are not required but may be useful for reciprocity with other states. Permits are issued by the Department of Public Safety. Mississippi law does not specify a minimum age for permitless carry, although the application for a state concealed carry permit states that applicants must be 21 years or older, or at least 18 years old and active duty or retired military with a valid state ID. As a constitutional carry state, Mississippi has broad reciprocity with other states.
Other weapons
In addition to handguns, stun guns/tasers are allowed to be concealed carried in Kentucky with a concealed carry permit.
Permitted non-lethal weapons include:
- Pepper spray
- Tear gas
- Bear spray (legal for self-defense against wildlife)
- Bludgeons/batons
- Brass knuckles
- Less-lethal launchers
Duty to inform
There is no duty to inform in Mississippi.
Employee parking lots
Employers may not prohibit employees who are legally allowed to possess a firearm from transporting or storing a firearm in a locked private vehicle, even if parked on the employer’s premises. There are some exceptions.
