State Info
In Minnesota, concealed carry of a firearm is legal for adults aged 21 and older who are allowed under state and federal law to possess a firearm and who have a Minnesota Permit to Carry a Pistol (PCP). (Note: The constitutionality of the age limit is being challenged in federal district court.) In a private vehicle, handguns may be concealed carried only with a PCP license or a permit from a state with reciprocity. Without either permit, weapons must be unloaded and stored in the trunk or in a closed case, gun box or securely tied package.
Permits
Permits are issued at the local level by sheriffs’ offices. Resident and non-resident permits are available. Minnesota has limited reciprocity with other states, only recognizing about 15 states’ concealed carry permits.
Other weapons
No weapons other than handguns may be concealed carried in Minnesota.
Permitted non-lethal weapons include:
- Stun guns/tasers (background check required)
- Pepper spray
- Tear gas
- Bear spray (legal for self-defense against wildlife)
- Bludgeons/batons
- Less-lethal launchers
Duty to inform
Minnesota state law requires drivers to notify police of the presence of a concealed weapon during traffic stops or at weigh stations only if asked by a law enforcement officer.
Employee parking lots
Employers may not prevent employees from lawfully having weapons in a parking facility or parking area.
