Kansas is a constitutional carry state, which means law-abiding adults 21 years and over who can legally possess a firearm under federal and state law may carry a concealed handgun without obtaining a permit. This right extends to concealed carry in a private vehicle.
Permits
Permits are not required but may be useful for reciprocity with other states. Concealed carry handgun licenses (CCHLs) are available to qualified residents and members of the military. CCHLs are issued by the state attorney general’s office but must be applied for through the local county sheriff. Eight hours of training is required before application. Kansas accepts valid concealed carry permits from all other states.
Other weapons
No weapons other than handguns may be concealed carried in Kansas.
Permitted non-lethal weapons include:
- Stun guns/tasers (with restrictions)
- Pepper spray
- Tear gas
- Bear spray (legal for self-defense against wildlife)
- Bludgeons/batons
- Less-lethal launchers
Duty to inform
There is no duty to inform in Kansas.
Employee parking lots
Employers may not prohibit employees from possessing a firearm in a private vehicle, even if parked on the employer’s premises.
