OSHA has cited employers under the General Duty Clause of the OSH Act for putting shrouds/guards around emergency stop controls. Generally, this would only be allowed if the rings or guards had sufficient clearance so as not to impede the intentional use of the controls. [OSHA has said that sufficient clearance is recognized as a clear surface area of 120mm diameter centered on the actuator (approximately 4 3/4 inches) with nothing in this area extending above the plane of the actuated (pressed) button].
