Wisconsin offers title services online, through mail, and in-person. However, not all title transactions are eligible to be completed online. To apply for a certificate of title within Wisconsin by mail or in-person, the following items are required:
- Certificate of title signed by the previous owner;
- Completed form MV1;
- License plates, if applicable;
- Current Wisconsin driver license or a copy of the license, if applicable; and
- Title fee and sales tax payment by check or money order.
Other relevant information includes:
- The vehicle and/or vehicle title may be subject to sales and use tax,
- Wisconsin generally allows credit for tax paid to another state, and
- Vehicle identification number (VIN) inspections aren't typically required.
Agency: Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Division of Motor Vehicles.
Fees: There are fees associated with titling a vehicle within Wisconsin, including an original title and title transfer fee of $164.50.
