Every motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, pole trailer, and recreational vehicle driven or moved upon West Virginia highways must be titled and registered.
The following items are typically required to obtain a vehicle title within West Virginia:
- Manufacturer's certificate of origin;
- Title application;
- Bill of sale or invoice reflecting the purchase price, if applicable;
- Properly assigned title, if applicable;
- Odometer reading, if applicable; and
- All applicable fees and taxes.
All notarized bill of sales or DMV form bill of sale (DMV-7-TR) must be accompanied by a copy of both the buyer and seller's drivers license.
Other relevant information includes:
- The vehicle and/or vehicle title may be subject to sales and use tax,
- West Virginia does not allow credit for tax paid to another state, and
- Vehicle identification number (VIN) inspections aren't typically required.
