Vehicle titling - West Virginia

Every motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, pole trailer, and recreational vehicle driven or moved upon West Virginia highways must be titled and registered.

The following items are typically required to obtain a vehicle title within West Virginia:

• Manufacturer's certificate of origin;
• Title application;
• Bill of sale or invoice reflecting the purchase price, if applicable;
• Properly assigned title, if applicable;
• Odometer reading, if applicable; and
• All applicable fees and taxes.

All notarized bill of sales or DMV form bill of sale (DMV-7-TR) must be accompanied by a copy of both the buyer and seller's drivers license.

Other relevant information includes:

• The vehicle and/or vehicle title may be subject to sales and use tax,
• West Virginia does not allow credit for tax paid to another state, and
• Vehicle identification number (VIN) inspections aren't typically required.
