Vehicle titling - Utah

Every vehicle — including motor vehicles, motorcycles, trailers, semitrailers, and manufactured homes — operated within Utah must be titled, with the exception of non-commercial trailers that have an unladen weight of 750 pounds or less.

The following items are typically required to obtain a car title within Utah:

• Application for Utah title;
• Original certificate of title (to transfer a title);
• Driver license;
• Emissions and vehicle identification number (VIN) inspection certificates, if applicable; and
• All taxes and applicable fees.

Other relevant information includes:

• The vehicle and/or title may be subject to sales and use tax;
• Utah generally allows credit for tax paid to another state;
• Vehicles to be registered within Salt Lake, Davis, Utah, Weber, or Cache county may require an emission inspection; and
• Vehicle identification number (VIN) inspections are required for out-of-state vehicles.
