A current Tennessee resident can obtain a title for a new or used vehicle from their county clerk's office. Depending on the type of vehicle, some or all of the following items will need to be submitted to the local county clerk:
- Proof of identification and proof of residency;
- Manufacturer's statement of origin;
- Vehicle's invoice (for new vehicles);
- A copy of the current registration, if applicable;
- A valid certificate of title which is properly signed; and
- An odometer disclosure statement, if applicable.
Other relevant information includes:
- The vehicle and/or title may be subject to sale and use tax,
- Tennessee generally allows credit for tax paid to another state, and
- Vehicle identification number (VIN) inspections aren't typically required.
Agency: Tennessee Department of Revenue, Vehicle Services Division.
Fees: There are fees associated with titling a vehicle within Tennessee, including an $11 title fee.
