There are several different auto title scenarios in South Dakota, so it is best to contact the Department of Revenue (DOR) directly to determine which supporting documents will be needed to title your vehicle. However, the following items are typically required:
- A valid South Dakota driver license or state-issued photo identification card,
- A completed and signed copy of car title application (Form MV-608), and
- Auto insurance card.
If the vehicle was purchased out-of-state, a bill of sale, purchase order, or sales contract must be provided to DOR at the time of application.
Other relevant information includes:
- The vehicle and/or title may be subject to tax,
- South Dakota generally allows credit for tax paid to another state, and
- Vehicle identification number (VIN) inspections aren't typically required.
Agency: South Dakota Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicle Division.
Fees: There are fees associated with titling a vehicle within South Dakota, including a $10 title fee.
