The following documents are required to obtain a vehicle title within Rhode Island:
- Completed application (Form TR-2/TR-9),
- Bill of sale,
- Title certificate or manufacturer's statement of origin,
- Valid Rhode Island driver license or another form of photo identification,
- Proof of Rhode Island residency, and
- Tax form.
Other relevant information includes:
- The vehicle and/or title may be subject to sales and use tax,
- Rhode Island typically allows credit for tax paid to another state,
- Vehicle identification number (VIN) checks are required for out of state vehicles, and
- Rhode island does not title vehicles model year 2000 and older.
Agency: Rhode Island Department of Revenue, Division of Motor Vehicles.
Fees: There are fees associated with titling a vehicle within Rhode Island, including a $52.50 title fee.
