Vehicle titling - Rhode Island

The following documents are required to obtain a vehicle title within Rhode Island:

• Completed application (Form TR-2/TR-9),
• Bill of sale,
• Title certificate or manufacturer's statement of origin,
• Valid Rhode Island driver license or another form of photo identification,
• Proof of Rhode Island residency, and
• Tax form.

Other relevant information includes:

• The vehicle and/or title may be subject to sales and use tax,
• Rhode Island typically allows credit for tax paid to another state,
• Vehicle identification number (VIN) checks are required for out of state vehicles, and
• Rhode island does not title vehicles model year 2000 and older.

Agency: Rhode Island Department of Revenue, Division of Motor Vehicles.

Fees: There are fees associated with titling a vehicle within Rhode Island, including a $52.50 title fee.
