To obtain a vehicle title within Ohio, applicants must generally provide the following items (however, required items vary depending on the type of vehicle being titled):
- Application for certificate of title to a motor vehicle (form BMV 3774);
- Manufacturer's certificate of origin;
- Payment for title fees, including a lien holder notation (if applicable);
- Original title assigned to the buyer;
- Proper identification; and
- Affidavit (form BMV 3722), if applicable.
Other relevant information includes:
- The vehicle and/or title may be subject to sales and use tax,
- Ohio generally allows credit for tax paid to another state,
- Vehicle identification number (VIN) inspections are required for out-of-state vehicles, and
- There are some electronic titling options on the BMV website.
Agency: Ohio Department of Public Safety, Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
Fees: There are fees associated with titling a vehicle within Ohio, including a $15 title fee. VIN inspections have a fee of $6.50.
