To receive a vehicle title in New York, the following must be provided
- A completed application for title;
- Proof of ownership;
- Proof of owner's identity;
- Proof of incorporation, if applicable;
- Proof of partnership, if applicable;
- Sales tax clearance, if applicable;
- Odometer disclosure statement, if applicable;
- Damage disclosure statement, if applicable; and
- Any applicable fees.
Proof of ownership could include a retail certificate of sale, manufacturer's certificate of origin, an original title (whether in-state or out-of-state), or bill of sale.
Other relevant information includes:
- The vehicle and/or title may be subject to local sales and use tax,
- Safety inspections are required every 12 months and when the ownership of a vehicle is transferred, and
- New York will issue a title without vehicle registration.
Agency: New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, Title Services Bureau.
Fees: There are fees associated with titling a vehicle within New York, including a $50 vehicle title fee.
