In general, the following items are required to obtain a car title:
- Valid New Jersey driver license or state-issued photo identification card;
- Proof of auto insurance that meets New Jersey minimum coverage standards;
- Manufacturer's certificate of origin displaying a tax-satisfied stamp;
- Corporation code and address of any lien holder;
- The current vehicle title, if transferring vehicle ownership; and
- Odometer reading at the time of sale.
Other relevant information includes:
- The vehicle and/or title may be subject to additional fees, including sales and use tax;
- New Jersey grants credit for sales or use tax paid to another state; and
- Vehicle inspections may be required.
Agency: New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.
Fees: There are fees associated with titling a vehicle within New Jersey, including a $60 title fee for a standard vehicle. The fee is $85 for a vehicle financed with one lien, and $100 for a vehicle financed with two liens. American Express, MasterCard, Visa, Discover, checks, money orders, and cash are all acceptable payment methods.
