An application for a new, New Hampshire title is completed either by a New Hampshire dealership at the time a vehicle is purchased or by a town/city clerk at the time a vehicle is registered. The dealership or clerk's office will forward the completed Title Application to the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for processing. Once the application is received at the DMV, a new title will be produced and sent directly to the vehicle owner or lienholder within 50 calendar days.
The following items are required to obtain a certificate of title within New Hampshire:
- Title application (TDMV 23);
- Manufacturer's certificate of origin;
- Form TDMV 101, if applicable;
- Bill of sale, if applicable;
- Current or expired New Hampshire certificate of registration, or a valid New Hampshire or out-of-state certificate of title; and
- Any applicable fees.
Other relevant information includes:
- Tax isn't imposed on the vehicle title,
- Vehicle identification number (VIN) inspections may be required (see below for more information), and
- Trailers with a gross weight of less than 3,001 aren't required to be titled.
VIN verification or inspection is required for:
- Abandoned vehicles;
- Government vehicles;
- Antique vehicles;
- Vehicles from a foreign country;
- Vehicles coming from a state that only requires a title for vehicle 10 years and newer;
- Vehicles that are registered within New Hampshire, but the new owner does not have the previous registration; and
- Homemade trailers that weigh less than 3,000 pounds.
