The Vehicle Services Bureau (VSB) regulates the titling and registration of motor vehicles within Montana. A motor vehicle can't be titled within Montana without also being registered. All registration occurs at your local county treasurer's office.
The following items are required to title a vehicle within Montana:
- The previous years Montana registration receipt or out-of-state title;
- Statement of fact (Form MV100), if applicable; and
- Any title fees and taxes.
Other relevant information includes:
- The vehicle and/or title may be subject to local tax,
- Montana does not grant credit for tax paid to another state, and
- Vehicle identification number (VIN) inspections are required for rebuilt salvage vehicles.
Agency: Montana Department of Justice, Motor Vehicle Division, Vehicle Services Bureau.
Fees: There are fees associated with titling a vehicle within Montana, including an $8.24 security interest filing fee.
