All new and used vehicles must be titled with the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV). To title a new or used vehicle, the following items must be mailed or delivered to OMV Headquarters or may be processed in an OMV office:
- Completed vehicle application form (DPSMV 1799);
- Manufacturer's statement of origin (for new vehicles);
- Current certificate of title (for used vehicles);
- Original itemized invoice from dealer to the purchaser or notarized bill of sale;
- Properly completed and assigned odometer disclosure statement;
- Original or copy of properly completed UCC-1 form, if applicable; and
- Payment for applicable fees.
Other relevant information includes:
- The vehicle and/or title may be subject to sales and use tax.;
- Some vehicles, such as farm tractors, are exempt from obtaining license and registration but may still be titled if desired; and
- Vehicle safety inspections are required.
Agency: Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections, Office of Motor Vehicles.
Fees: There are fees associated with titling a vehicle within Louisiana, including a $68.50 title fee. Additional fees may also be imposed.
