In addition to completing an application for a certificate of car title (if applicable), car owners must submit the following documentation when applying for a new or used car title certificate:
- The vehicle title or a manufacturer's certificate of origin;
- Proof of current auto insurance;
- Receipt of sales and property tax; and
- Proof of completing a motor vehicle examination (Form MVE-1) or an application for an out-of-state verification (Form TR-65), if applicable.
Kansas law requires trailers to be titled and registered. There are three exceptions to the trailer titling/registration requirement. The three exceptions are:
- Farm trailers hauling 6,000 pounds or less of agricultural product;
- Farm trailers used and designed for transporting hay or forage from a field to a storage area or from a storage area to a feedlot, which is only incidentally moved or operated upon the highways (this exception does not apply to farm semitrailers); and
- Trailers with an operating weight of 2,000 pounds or less.
Other relevant information includes:
- The vehicle and/or title may be subject to sales and use tax,
- Iowa allows credit for vehicle sales and use tax paid to another state, and
- Vehicle identification number (VIN) inspections or motor vehicle examinations (MVE-1) are required for all vehicles not previously titled within Kansas.
Agency: Kansas Department of Revenue, Division of Vehicles.
Fees: There are fees associated with titling a vehicle within Kansas, including a $10 title fee. There is an additional $3 application fee for a repossession title.
