To obtain a new or used vehicle title within Iowa, vehicle owners must submit the following documentation:
- Manufacturer's statement of origin;
- Bill of sale or purchase agreement;
- Completed application for Iowa certificate of title (form 411007);
- Odometer statement (form 411077);
- Damage disclosure (form 411108), if applicable;
- Cancellation of security interest (form 411168), if applicable; and
- Signed title from previous owner/dealer, if applicable.
Other relevant information includes:
- The vehicle title may be subject to sales and use tax;
- Iowa allows credit for vehicle sales and use tax paid to another state; and
- Vehicle identification number (VIN) inspections may be required when there is a VIN error in the last six digits, a questionable transaction, an imported vehicle, a grey market vehicle with a short VIN, a non-Iowa resident, and a vehicle suspected of being stolen or cloned.
Agency: Iowa Department of Transportation, Motor Vehicle Division.
Fees: There are fees associated with titling a vehicle within Iowa, including a $25 replacement title fee.
