If you have purchased a new or used vehicle — including a passenger car, motor home, truck, van, trailer, or motorcycle — you'll need to submit the following items to the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to obtain the vehicle title in your name. Alaska requires that you apply for a title in your name within 30 days of purchasing a vehicle.
- A manufacturer's certificate of origin (MCO) or other comparable document;
- An odometer reading for vehicles under 12,000 pounds and less than 20 years old; and
- A fully completed Vehicle Transaction Application Form V1, signed by the vehicle owner in ink.
Other relevant information includes:
- A vehicle identification number (VIN) and/or physical inspection isn't required,
- A vehicle must be titled in state in order to register the vehicle within Alaska,
- Alaska will issue a title only (no registration) to vehicles that don't require Alaska registration, and
- The title can't be filed electronically.
Agency: Alaska Department of Administration, Division of Motor Vehicles.
Fees: There are fees associated with vehicle titling within Alaska, including the $15 title transfer fee. Additional fee information can be found online at www.doa.alaska.gov.
