All motor vehicles operated within South Dakota must be registered, except for applicable farm vehicles. The annual registration of noncommercial vehicles is staggered throughout the year, excluding the months of April, October, and December. The first letter of the owner's last name determines the month in which the owner must register the vehicle.
Vehicles used to transport items weighing more than 500 pounds (for business purposes) must be commercially licensed. If your vehicle only travels within South Dakota, you most obtain an in-state commercial license from your county treasurer's office.
Agency: Department of Revenue and Regulation; see Regulatory Agencies for address(es).
License plate display
Motorcycles, recreational vehicles, semitrailers, and trailers are issued one license plate to display on the rear of the vehicle. All other motor vehicles are issued two license plates to display. One license plate must be displayed on the front of the vehicle, and the other license plate must be displayed on the rear of the vehicle.
International Registration Plan
South Dakota is a member of the International Registration Plan (IRP). The IRP is a base state system for vehicle registration fees allowing a carrier to apply for vehicle registration and pay fees to a single jurisdiction.
Motor vehicles that qualify for apportionment consist of the following:
- A power unit having two axles and a gross vehicle weight (GVW) or registered weight in excess of 26,000 pounds;
- A power unit having three or more axles, regardless of weight; or
- A unit used in combination when the weight of such combination exceeds a GVW or 26,000 pounds.
Temporary permit: If adding a new or replacement vehicle to a fleet, or if you are a new applicant, a request for a temporary operating authority can be made. A temporary operating authority is valid for a maximum of 45 days or until the end of the current registration year, whichever comes first. A vehicle may receive only one temporary operating authority.
Agency: South Dakota Department of Revenue, Motor Carrier Services.
Fees: Fees vary depending on the fee schedule in each jurisdiction in which your vehicles travel, and the percent traveled in each jurisdiction of the total distance that your vehicles travel.
