All motor vehicles and trailers used upon the highways and roads of Nebraska must be registered, except for — but not limited to — the following:
- Off-road vehicles,
- Vehicles which run on rails or tracks,
- Farm tractors,
- Self-propelled equipment, and
- Implements of husbandry.
Vehicles are registered on a monthly, staggered basis. The registration expiration date is determined by the month the vehicle was purchased. However, owners of two or more vehicles may register their vehicles on a calendar-year basis (January to December), or on an annual basis for the same registration period beginning in the month chosen by the owner.
If you are the owner of a commercial plated vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight rating, gross vehicle weight, or gross combination weight over 10,000 pounds or a farm vehicle over 16 tons, you are required to read the Truck Safety Registration Declaration form.
Agency: Nebraska State Patrol-Carrier Enforcement; see Regulatory Agencies for address(es).
License plate display
Nebraska issues two license plates to be displayed on the front and rear of a motor vehicle. However, truck tractors, trailers, buses, and apportionable vehicles receive one plate to be displayed on the front of the vehicle.
International Registration Plan
Nebraska is a member of the International Registration Plan (IRP). The IRP is a base state system for vehicle registration fees allowing a carrier to apply for vehicle registration and pay fees to a single jurisdiction.
Motor vehicles that qualify for apportionment consist of the following:
- A power unit having two axles and a gross vehicle weight (GVW) or registered weight in excess of 26,000 pounds;
- A power unit having three or more axles, regardless of weight; or
- A unit used in combination when the weight of such combination exceeds a GVW or 26,000 pounds.
Temporary permit: Nebraska will issue a temporary registration for vehicles added to an active fleet in good standing for a period of 45 days. Temporary registration is issued for newly acquired vehicles, weight increases, and lost vehicle identification. Temporary registration for lost vehicle identification is only valid for 20 days.
Hunter's or unladen weight permit: A vehicle owner may apply for an unladen weight registration which allows the operation of a vehicle at the unladen (empty) weight for a period of 30 days. The fee for the permit is $20 per vehicle.
Agency: Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles, Motor Carrier Services.
Fees: Fees are calculated by multiplying the fee for that jurisdiction times the appropriate mileage percentage. The sum of all the fees calculated for each jurisdiction equals the total registration fees due.
