Vehicle maintenance - Nova Scotia

Application

Every truck or bus carrier must ensure that each owned or leased vehicle, including all trailers, meets the required performance and maintenance standards. Also, every carrier must have a system to inspect, maintain and repair each owned or leased vehicle at regular intervals.

Recordkeeping

A vehicle record must be kept for each owned or leased vehicle. The vehicle record must contain the following information:

• The make, model, plate number, serial number, tire size, year, and company number, if any;
• The lessor’s name, if any;
• The nature and due date of various inspection and maintenance operations to be performed;
• A record of inspection, repairs, and maintenance;
• A lubrication record; and
• A record of modifications that involve axles or suspensions that affect the vehicle’s gross vehicle weight or gross axle weight rating.

Vehicle records must be kept for two years where the vehicle is housed or maintained, and for six months after the vehicle leaves the carrier’s control.
