International Registration Plan
Tennessee is a member of the International Registration Plan (IRP). The IRP is a base state system for vehicle registration fees allowing a carrier to apply for vehicle registration and pay fees to a single jurisdiction.
Under the IRP, carriers from the member states and provinces, operating vehicles having a gross weight in excess of 26,000 pounds, or three or more axles regardless of weight, or used in combination when the weight of such combination exceeds 26,000 pounds, may be prorated in lieu of full registration.
Temporary Permit: Temporary permits, valid for 45 days, are available prior to receipt of original credentials. Payment must be received prior to issuance.
Hunter's Permit: Tennessee issues a 15-day hunter permit at no fee. Tennessee recognizes hunter permits issued by other jurisdictions for travel in Tennessee.
Agency: Department of Safety; see Regulatory Agencies for address(es).
Fees
Commercial vehicles are registered on the basis of declared maximum gross weight including vehicle and load. Combinations of tractor semitrailer are registered on the basis of the gross weight of the combination and the plate is issued for the tractor on such weight.
A Department of Safety fee will be added to each plate issued.
Freight trailers and semitrailers permanent registration available; additional fee for replacement of lost or mutilated plate.
Any carrier operating freight vehicles exclusively on streets of a municipal corporation, or on any highway up to 15 air miles beyond a municipality, may be registered under the municipal zone classification. Provided, further, a carrier may apply for a County Use license, the annual fee of $500, to be operated exclusively in the base county and such other counties as may adjoin it.
