In North Carolina, all motor vehicles and trailers used upon the highways must be registered, except those vehicles exempt by law.
Registration fees are payable to the Division of Motor Vehicles.
North Carolina has implemented a monthly staggered registration system.
License plate display
Truck-tractors must display the license plate on the front of the vehicle.
Registration plates issued for a motor vehicle other than a trailer or semitrailer must be displayed on the front and rear.
When only one registration plate is issued for a motor vehicle other than a truck-tractor, the plate must be attached to the rear of the motor vehicle.
North Carolina law provides that motor vehicles transporting substances that may cover or discolor the plate or vehicles with a mechanical loading device that may damage the plate may display the license plate on the front of the vehicle.
International Registration Plan
North Carolina is a member of the International Registration Plan (IRP). The IRP is a base state system for vehicle registration fees allowing a carrier to apply for vehicle registration and pay fees to a single jurisdiction.
Temporary Permit: A temporary permit may be issued for a period of 10-days.
Hunter's Permit: A hunter's permit may be issued for a period of 10-days. This permit is only valid for the empty (unladen) weight of the vehicle.

Fees
Truck license fees apply for private, contract, exempt, and common carriers.
Maximum legal weight = 80,000 lb.
Trailer or semitrailer registration fee applies.
Trailers or semitrailers transporting unginned cotton, peanuts, soybeans, silage, corn, hay, cucumbers, or irrigation pipes and equipment on a not-for-hire basis – no fee.
Tobacco handling trailers, trucks or tobacco trailers, when used by a farmer, his tenant, agent or employee to handle or transport tobacco in connection with the pulling, tying or curing of same — no fee.
