All motor vehicles and trailers used upon the highways of Nebraska must be registered.
Registration for non-apportioned, intrastate commercial vehicles is made through the office of the county treasurer in the county where vehicle has situs. This registration period is staggered and registrations are issued for 12 consecutive months expiring the first day of the month of expiration with that month to be used as the renewal period.
License plate display
One license plate is issued for apportionable vehicles, buses, dealers, minitrucks, trailers, and truck-tractors.
When two license plates are issued, one must be prominently displayed at all times on the front and one on the rear of the registered motor vehicle or trailer.
When only one plate is issued, it must be prominently displayed on the rear of the registered motor vehicle or trailer.
When only one plate is issued for apportionable motor vehicles and truck-tractors, the plate must be prominently displayed on the front of the apportionable vehicle.
International Registration Plan
Nebraska is a member of the International Registration Plan (IRP). The IRP is a base state system for vehicle registration fees allowing a carrier to apply for vehicle registration and pay fees to a single jurisdiction.
Proportional registration is available to carriers from the member states and provinces whose vehicle qualify as a fleet. To qualify as apportionable, a fleet shall consist of one or more vehicles having a gross weight or registered gross vehicle weight in excess of 26,000 pounds; or having three or more axles, regardless of weight; or used in combination, when the weight of such combination exceeds 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. Registration expires December 31 of each year; renewal period is from October 1 through the last day of January.
Temporary Permit: Nebraska issues a temporary permit for a vehicle(s) to be added to an established fleet for a period of 45-days while apportioned registration is being processed. The carrier must be in good standing with the Department to be eligible for temporary permit. One temporary per unit will be issued at no fee. Permits are valid for a period of only 20-days for lost credentials.
Hunter's Permit: Unladen weight permits are available to owner-operators who are no longer operating under lease to a Nebraska-based company. This permit allows the operation of a vehicle(s) at the unladen (empty) weight for a period of 30-days or until the owner-operator leases to another carrier or registers the vehicle(s) in their own name.
Agency: Intrastate: The Office of the County Treasurer in the county in which the applicant resides. Interstate: Department of Motor Vehicles; see Regulatory Agencies for address(es).
Fees
The fees for apportioned vehicles are prorated and reduced on month of registration.
Permanent trailer license plates are available with a charge for initial registration, and a fee for renewal. Plates are valid as long as the trailer remains in the fleet, and must be returned when vehicle is removed from the fleet.
Permanent truck license plates available beginning with 2000 registration year with an additional charge for new plate and a fee for renewal.
Intrastate
Commercial non-apportioned vehicles are registered on the basis of gross vehicle weight. “Gross vehicle weight” means the sum of the empty weight of a truck or truck-tractor and the empty weight of any trailer, semitrailer or combination with which it is to be operated in combination at any one time, plus the maximum load to be carried at any one time.
In addition to the registration fee, each county assesses a motor vehicle tax and motor vehicle fee. Contact the county treasurer from the county in which you are registering for motor vehicle tax and motor vehicle fee information.
