All motor vehicles used upon the highways of Montana must be registered for the combined gross weight, including any trailing units, except farm tractors incidentally moved upon the highways, special mobile equipment, and implements of husbandry, designed and used exclusively by an owner in the conduct of his own farming operation. Special mobile equipment shall display an equipment identification plate attached to the equipment before any piece of equipment is moved on the highway.
The vehicle license and registration period is staggered on a calendar quarter basis.
License plate display
Montana issues two license plates to be displayed on the front and the rear of the vehicle.
Trailers, semitrailers, and pole trailers are required to display one license plate on the rear of the vehicle.
International Registration Plan
Montana is a member of the International Registration Plan (IRP). The IRP is a base state system for vehicle registration fees allowing a carrier to apply for vehicle registration and pay fees to a single jurisdiction.
The IRP provides for all carriers from participating states, operating as a fleet, to prorate fees. The IRP defines a fleet as one or more vehicles with three or more axles or having a gross vehicle weight in excess of 26,000 pounds, operating in one or more member jurisdictions.
Montana does not allow refunds of motor vehicle fees. However, the Gross Vehicle Weight Fees may be credited to the carrier’s account and transferred to another vehicle that will be licensed in the same registration period. Credit may not be carried over to another registration period.
Temporary Permit: Temporary permits are available to carriers with established accounts and will normally be issued for 30 days. All requests will be processed only after the appropriate supplemental paperwork has been faxed or received by the licensing technician.
Hunter's Permit: When an operator is changing from one company to another and needs to travel to the new company to get the credentials to operate, there is the option of obtaining an unladen permit. The unladen permit is issued for the empty weight of the vehicle and is valid for five days.
Agency: Department of Transportation; see Regulatory Agencies for address(es).
Fees
Montana’s registration fee is composed of three parts: (1) Registration Fee + (2) Fee in Lieu of Tax + (3) Gross Vehicle Weight Fees.
Credit/transfer of fees
No fees are refundable. Registration fees and Fee in Lieu of Tax are not transferable to another unit when an add/delete is done. The unused portion of the Gross Vehicle Weight Fees that result from deleting a unit may be applied toward the fee calculation for a unit that is added to the fleet during the same registration period. The minimum credit allowed is for a whole month. Partial months cannot be credited.
Permanent trailer plates
Permanent trailer plates are available for under 6,000 lb., and 6,000 lb. and over.
