All vehicles driven on public roadways in Massachusetts must be registered, insured, and inspected. Registration is made to the Registrar of Motor Vehicles.
The number plates of a replaced vehicle may be used on a newly acquired used vehicle until 5 p.m. of the 7th calendar day following the date of transfer within the same calendar year.
License plate display
Massachusetts requires license plates to be displayed on the front and the rear of vehicles. Trailers display one plate on the rear of the vehicle.
If one plate is issued, it must be attached to the rear of the vehicle.
Reciprocity
Massachusetts grants full interstate reciprocity on vehicle license and registration to carriers from all non-IRP states and provinces.
International Registration Plan
Massachusetts is a member of the International Registration Plan (IRP). Vehicles eligible to apportion under the IRP are required to apportion or obtain a trip permit before entering Massachusetts.
The IRP is a base state system allowing a carrier to apply for vehicle registration and pay fees to a single jurisdiction.
Temporary Permit: A temporary permit may be issued for a period of 45-days and no extra cost. The temporary permit may be issued to a carrier wishing to modify their currently filed IRP application by re-registering vehicles and/or jurisdictions, transferring a plate, increasing registered weight replacing a lost/stolen cab card, license plate, and/or validation sticker, and fleet to fleet transfers (if both fleets currently exist).
Agency: Registry of Motor Vehicles; see Regulatory Agencies for address(es). Application for IRP registration may also be made to branch offices in Boston, Springfield, and Milford.
Fees
Fees are according to the state commercial vehicle fee chart. Flat fee applies to commercial vehicles between 1-4,000 lbs.
