Vehicle license or registration - Connecticut
All motor vehicles and trailers used on the highways of this state must be registered. The motor vehicle registration law is administered by the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. A copy of the certificate of registration must be carried in the vehicle.
The period of registration is May 1 through April 30.
License plate display
When a single plate is issued, it must be displayed on the rear of the vehicle. If two plates are issued, they must be displayed on the front and the rear of the vehicle.
International Registration Plan
Connecticut is a member of the International Registration Plan (IRP). The IRP is a base state system for vehicle registration fees allowing a carrier to apply for vehicle registration and pay fees to a single jurisdiction.
Connecticut Statutes (Conn. Gen. Stat. §14-270(b)) state that when carriers obtain an overweight permit from the Department of Transportation for operation in Connecticut, the weight for “Connecticut” listed on the IRP cab card must be up to the weight level of the overweight permit issued. If the vehicle will be operated at a weight higher than listed for Connecticut on the IRP cab card, the base must jurisdiction increase the Connecticut weight on the IRP cab card to match the weight on the Connecticut overweight permit.
Connecticut has implemented a staggered registration system for IRP plated vehicles.
Temporary permit: IRP registrants based in Connecticut may be issued a temporary permit to operate a vehicle for a period not to exceed 45 days. An application to register the vehicle must be submitted within 10 days of the date of issuance of the temporary permit. There is a fee for a temporary permit.
Hunter's permit: A permit may be issued to an owner-operator for registered gross weight not in excess of the empty weight of the vehicle for a period of twenty days.
