Alaska is not a member of the International Registration Plan (IRP).
Every motor vehicle, trailer and semitrailer, when driven or moved upon a highway in Alaska is subject to registration, except:
- Any such vehicle which is driven or moved upon a highway only for the purpose of crossing such highway from one property to another.
- Any implement of husbandry which is only incidentally operated or moved upon a highway.
- Any special mobile equipment.

License plate display
When two license plates are issued, they are displayed on the front and the rear of the vehicle. If one plate is issued, it is displayed on the rear of the vehicle.
Fees
The registration fees are based on the manufacturer’s advertised unladen weight or upon the actual unladen weight given by the owner, subject to the approval of the Division of Motor Vehicles.
One-time registration fee for a commercial trailer or semitrailer is available.
Other fees include:
- Title fee including transfer of title
- Lien recording fee
- Replacement of any registration plate set
- Duplicate of original certificate of title
- Duplicate of certificate of registration
