The purpose of the Hazardous Materials Table (HMT) is to assign proper shipping names, hazard class and division, and provide guidance for packaging and handling requirements for hazardous materials.
Scope
Anyone offering a hazardous material for shipment must use the Hazardous Materials Table to properly identify and classify their material.

Key definitions
- N.o.s.: An abbreviation for “not otherwise specified.”
- Proper shipping name: The name of the hazardous material shown in Roman print (not italics) in 172.101 of the Hazardous Materials Table.
- Solution: Any homogeneous liquid mixture of two or more chemical compounds or elements that will not undergo any segregation under conditions normal to transportation.
- Technical name: A recognized chemical name or microbiological name currently used in scientific and technical handbooks, journals, and texts.
