Summary of differences between federal and state regulations

Maine has several laws related to union activity in the private sector; however, these laws provide protections similar to those of the National Labor Relations Act and Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act.

The state does have specific procedures regarding arbitration and mediation, in Title 26 Chapter 9 of the Maine Revised Statutes.

Strikes

Maine requires that notice be given when advertising for workers to help at workplaces undergoing a strike.

Right to work

The state has no right to work law.

Public employment

Maine has several laws governing collective bargaining for various public sector (i.e., firefighters, universities) and agricultural employment.
