Under 393.130, heavy equipment must be secured with four tiedowns. Can a single chain take the place of two tiedowns when securing heavy equipment?

Yes. One chain can be routed through two anchor points on the equipment and serve in place of two separate tiedowns. This option isn’t discussed in the regulations but is a widely accepted practice. A binder is needed on each end/side so both sides can be tightened and adjusted separately. A span of loose chain would also need to be left in the middle so the failure of one end wouldn’t impact the other.
