Dangerous goods transport
An agreement respecting administration of the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, 1992 was signed by representatives of Transport Canada and the Government of the Northwest Territories in 1996.
The Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act prohibits the transportation of all dangerous goods on Northwest Territories highways except when authorized by a permit.
Transporting dangerous goods is prohibited on Northwest Territories highways, unless the vehicle operator:
- Complies with all prescribed safety requirements;
- Possesses all applicable shipping documents;
- Complies with all safety standards concerning the vehicle and any containers and packaging; and
- Displays all applicable safety marks.
A person who transports or proposes to transport dangerous goods may be required to prepare emergency plans to deal with the discharge of dangerous goods and may also be required to prove financial responsibility.
