Motor Vehicle Regulations in the Yukon Territory prescribe the permits which are issued to commercial carriers who do not have permanent motor vehicle registration in Yukon:
Both permits are valid for a one-way trip and a period of 14 days from the date of issue.
Permits are available 24 hours each day at the Whitehorse and Watson Lake Weigh Stations; however, those carriers wishing to purchase permanent vehicle registration plates must do so at the Motor Vehicles office in Whitehorse, or at a Territorial Agent in the communities. The hours of operation at these offices are not always convenient for truckers who arrive on weekends or late at night and must, as a result, purchase the more expensive permit rather than lose travel time or compromise quality of shipment.
As a result, the carrier can, upon presentation of the permit (and within 14 days) credit the cost of the permit against the purchase of permanent registration for the vehicle at the Motor Vehicles Office or any Territorial Agent office.
Permits are obtained at the port-of-entry.
Fees:
Carriers that do not have a permanent Fuel Oil User number must obtain a prepaid single trip emblem from a weigh station. The emblem is a document that must be stamped by the weigh station operator on the entry or exit of the vehicle from the Yukon.
Carriers that obtain a prepaid single trip emblem may apply for a refund of the prepaid amount or the tax paid on purchases in the Yukon, whichever is the least, by submitting form F.O.T. Application 7a with proof of payment of Yukon fuel oil tax. An application for a refund must be submitted by August 1 of the following year. The refund forms accompany each emblem issued by the weigh station operators.
Fees: Single trip permit fee is $0.04 per kilometre.
