Operating authority requirements
Procedure: Saskatchewan offers a combination single-trip permit for operating authority and/or vehicle registration requirements, for Charter Bus Carriers only.
Charter Bus Carriers who do not hold operating authority in Saskatchewan and/or those who do not have vehicle registration in Saskatchewan must obtain single-trip permit authorization, and/or size and weight permits are also issued by the Permit Office.
Permit authorization is obtained by contacting the Permit Office open 24 hours a day, seven days a week at: (306) 775-6969. Permit authorization numbers are obtained over the telephone and invoices are sent to the carrier’s address.
Forms: None.
Agency: SGI Permit Office.
Fees: Registration at $0.006 per metric ton per kilometre ($11 minimum), plus a $2 administration fee, and $0.006 per kilometre fuel tax, and a $6 insurance fee. If not registering (per regulation) cost is a flat $15 for size and overweight fees.
Vehicle registration trip permits
Saskatchewan issues single trip permits to carriers operating vehicles greater than 11,794 kilograms in the province.
Vehicles registered in another Canadian province but operating in Saskatchewan with a gross weight of less than 11,794 kilograms can do so without a permit in the province; however, operations are limited to 90 days or less (cumulative). If the vehicle must operate in Saskatchewan for more than 90 days, the vehicle would be subject to Saskatchewan registration requirements (trip permits, dual registration, or registration under the International Registration Plan (IRP)).
Permit fees: 0.006 x metric tonne x kilometres (minimum $11, maximum $120)
Call the Saskatchewan Government Insurance Permit Office at (800) 667-7575 (within Saskatchewan) or (306) 775-6969.
Fuel trip permits
Vehicles entering Saskatchewan on single-trip permit authority may be assessed a fee in lieu of fuel tax. The fuel tax fee is $10 or $0.06 per kilometre travelled in Saskatchewan, whichever is greater.
Carriers registered in another IFTA jurisdiction must be able to show their IFTA account number in order to avoid paying a fee for fuel tax.
Carriers licensed to file Quarterly Fuel Tax Reports are not required to include the trips for which a fuel tax permit has been obtained, on their tax returns. Fuel tax paid under a single trip permit is non-refundable. Temporary permits are usually ordered in advance through the Central Permit Office by telephoning (306) 787-4036.
