Movements of super heavy and/or extra-overdimensional loads can be permitted provided the highway can accommodate the move and the move is not considered to be detrimental or unsafe for the other traveling public. "Super heavy" means that the total gross weight of the vehicle and load exceeds 165,000 pounds, and "extra-overdimensional" means that the width of the vehicle and load exceeds 16 ft or the height of the vehicle and load exceeds 15 ft 6in.
These permits can require at least 3 to 30 business days to process.
The application must be submitted to the Tennessee DOT Permits Office and must contain the following:
- Complete and detailed proposal of movement, including a route survey;
- Detailed sketch of vehicle and load;
- Tire sizes and contact pressures;
- Distance between axles;
- Load distribution to axles;
- Overall length, width, and height of movement;
- Detailed traffic control proposal; and
- Any other information required.
