In the state of Montana, super loads are considered as any load that exceeds 17 feet high, 18 feet wide, 150 feet long, and/or with weights requiring Department Bridge Bureau approval.
The department may impose conditions on the issuance of a complete super-load permit, including, but not limited to, requiring the permittee to:
- Obtain approval from local governments,
- Obtain all necessary permits,
- Obtain approval from affected utilities,
- Obtain required insurance,
- Submit a travel plan and/or route survey,
- Provide notice to the traveling public of the movement of loads,
- Limit travel to specific days and/or hours,
- Refrain from traveling during inclement weather conditions, and
- Provide adequate traffic control personnel, equipment, and devices.
Loads exceeding 18’ wide up to 34’ wide, 17, high up to 24’ high, and/or 150’ long up to 200’ long, must obtain the appropriate department district administrator or designee approval of a completed super-load permit application. The department's decision on a complete super-load application for these dimensions must be issued within two working days of a properly completed application submittal.
Loads exceeding 34’ wide, 24’ high, and/or 200’ long must obtain the appropriate department district administrator or designee approval of the super-load permit application. The department's decision on a super-load application for these dimensions must be issued within five working days of a properly completed application submittal.
