Summary of differences between federal and state regulations
The Massachusetts Department of Labor and Workforce Development administers and enforces civil rights and labor standards which have been enacted for the protection of state workers.
The state of Massachusetts allows for student workers to be paid at 80 percent of the minimum wage when the employment is part of a formal training program, also students working as camp counselors or counselor trainees at youth camps.
The law allows the department to allow an apprentice wage for a specified period of time which may be below the minimum wage, as well as to set a special wage for disabled workers whose earning capacity has been impaired.
