State Info
Québec requires heavy vehicles assembled after December 31, 1994, with a gross vehicle weight rating greater than 11,794 kilograms (26,000 pounds) operating on the province’s highways to have speed limiters set to 105 kilometres per hour. The rule does not apply to emergency vehicles, tool vehicles, buses, trailers, semitrailers, detachable axles, and personal vehicles.
The speed limiter requirement applies to all operators of heavy vehicles on Québec highways, including drivers from other Canadian jurisdictions and the United States. Québec enforces the requirement at weigh stations and through the use of radar on the highway.
Violators of the rule may be assessed penalties from $350 to $1,050.
Since August 15, 2006, Québec requires tank trucks transporting dangerous goods to be equipped with an on-board recording device or a vehicle stabilization system. For vehicles assembled before August 15, 2006, either system can be replaced by a speed limiter that limits speed to 100 kilometres per hour.
