Longer Vehicle Combinations (LVC)
LVCs operating under the provisions of CDOT rules and regulations are prohibited from transporting the following specified hazardous material types and quantities:
- Any quantity of hazardous material within the hazard classes specified within 49 CFR 172.504, Table 1; and
- Any material, unless otherwise indicated, within the hazardous classes specified within 49 CFR 172.504, Table 2. Specifications include:
- Exceeds 55 gallons per package;
- Is transported in quantities using containment systems greater than 3,500 water gallons, except as provided within HMP 3.4.3 of these rules;
- Is classified as “Material Poisonous by Inhalation” as it is defined within 39 CFR 171.8; and
- Requires evacuation of populated areas as specified within the most current version of the North American Emergency Response Guidebook.
Nuclear Materials
Each person transporting nuclear materials within the state must carry a copy of the shipping papers required within 49 CFR 172, Subpart C, and a paper or electronic copy of the nuclear materials transportation permit within the vehicle.
All motor vehicles carrying nuclear materials and entering Colorado on public roads must be inspected by an authorized Enforcement Official of the CSP nearest to the point at which the shipment of nuclear materials enters the state, or at a location specified by the CSP.
All motor vehicles carrying nuclear materials where the shipment originates within Colorado must be inspected by an authorized Enforcement Official of the CSP at the point of origin.
Prior to receiving authorization to continue transportation after a crash, a motor vehicle and shopping container transporting nuclear materials must be inspected by a qualified inspector in accordance with the procedures.
Motor vehicles transporting nuclear materials must schedule trips through all Colorado municipalities over 50,000 in population to avoid rush-hour traffic.
