Bridge rules
Georgia uses the federal bridge formula to determine maximum gross vehicle weight and maximum axle group weight limits on Georgia highways.
BRIDGE FORMULA
As noted above, some vehicles are subject to the bridge formula, shown below:
where W is the overall gross weight on any group of two or more consecutive axles (W = maximum allowed gross weight off the National Network) to the nearest 500 lb, L is the distance in feet between the extremes of any group of three or more consecutive axles, and N is the number of axles in the group under consideration; except that two consecutive sets of tandem axles may carry a gross load of 34,000 lb each providing the overall distance between the first and last axles of such consecutive sets of tandems is 36 ft or more.
L is the distance in feet between the first and last axles. This could include two axles that fall outside of the definition of a tandem. This applies to any group of axles on the Interstate, and gross weight only on non-interstate routes. (Exceptions: 3 or more axles on trailers may also be grouped together.)
