Michigan’s requirements for signs and tags correspond to the federal requirements; however, the state adds further requirements. Click the link(s) below to view the applicable requirements.

A summary of the additional requirements includes the following:
- There are specifications for lettering style and size of signs.
- There are requirements for placement and illumination of signs.
- There are requirements for directional signs.
- Standard colors for DANGER, CAUTION, and SAFETY INSTRUCTION signs must adhere to ANSI Z53.1-1971. TThis edition differs from the 1967 and 2011 editions adopted by federal OSHA 29 CFR 1910.145.
- Michigan requires specific colors for exit signs and any directional arrow.
- The slow-moving vehicle emblem must adhere to ASAE R276-1966 or ASAE S276.2-1968. These editions differ from the 1967 and 1971 editions, respectively, adopted by federal OSHA 29 CFR 1910.145.
- Tags shall be large enough to attract attention to the hazard, with the minimum letter size for the signal word in perspective to a safe viewing distance. The signal word shall be in bold type.
- There should be no variation in the type of design of tags posted or hung to warn of a specific hazard.
- Tags shall be protected or be of such material to last and maintain legibility during the assignment of the tag.
- There are requirements for "do not start" and “out of order” tags.
