The Standard Carrier Alpha Code (SCAC) is a system that assigns unique two-to-four letter codes to transportation companies for identification purposes. There are currently around 34,000 codes active in the system.
The SCAC is required for Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) intermodal interchange agreements when doing business with many shippers, on rate tariffs filed with regulatory agencies, government bills of lading, and on bids for government traffic.
The initial SCAC code assignment fee is $30.00 per code in U.S. funds drawn on a U.S. bank ($36.00 in U.S. funds if the check is drawn on a Canadian bank).
All codes must be renewed annually. The renewal fee (per code) is $26.00 in U.S. funds if drawn on a U.S. bank ($32.00 in U.S. funds if drawn on a Canadian bank).
To obtain an application for SCAC codes for motor carriers, call (703) 838-1822. The NMFTA assigns SCAC’s for all carriers except railroads. Rail carriers should contact the Association of American Railroads, Operations and Maintenance Department, (202) 639-2411. Companies wanting SCAC codes for trailers, containers, or chassis equipment operating in intermodal service may call (703) 639-2411. Information is also available at their website: www.erols.com/nmfta.
