Sanitation (general industry) - Iowa
Iowa has adopted federal OSHA standards and incorporates them by reference. Iowa OSHA has some additional sanitation requirements for railroad employers.
Iowa Administrative Code 875-29 lists unique standards for the following:
Potable water for drinking and washing, which must meet the standards of the Dept. of Health and Human Services and be made available according to the rules of the standard;
- Drinking water, including type of container/fixture used and locations where required;
- Wash basins, which must meet requirements for size, material, location, and adequate number per employee;
- Showers, which must meet material, size, number, and location specifications;
- Locker/dressing rooms, where size, location, lighting, temperature, number and material of lockers, and more are specified;
- Toilets, which must meet specifications regarding size, location, number required per employee, and construction material, as well as standards for urinals, chemical toilets, privies, and more;
- Toilet rooms, which must meet standards for proper heating, lighting, ventilation, separation of the sexes, and more;
- Eating areas/lunchrooms, which must meet requirements as to size, cleanliness, ventilation, heating, lighting, waste disposal, and more;
- Sleeping accommodations, which have specifications for size per employee, heating, lighting, ventilation, space between beds, and more; and
- General cleanliness and maintenance requirements for all facilities and fixtures listed in the standard.
The definitions section of the requirement is also unique to the state plan compared to federal OSHA.
