Michigan has adopted by reference (through Michigan's Motor Carrier Safety Act, PA 181 of 1963) the federal Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR), Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Parts 100 –180, as well as Parts 40, 356, 365, 368, 371, 373, 375, 376, 379, 383, 385, 387, 390 – 393, and 395 – 399 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and, any future changes. The adoption has been in effect since January 8, 1996.
The Michigan State Police (MSP), Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED), exercises regulatory control over the transportation of hazardous materials within the state.
The Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), Materials Management Division (MMD), administers Michigan's hazardous waste and liquid industrial waste programs.
