The Maine Department of Public Safety (DPS) has adopted by reference the federal Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR), Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Parts 107, 171-174, 177-180, 387, and 397, as amended from time to time, as well as Parts 40, 382, 387, 390-393, 395, 396, and 397 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, including subsequent amendments.

The Maine Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Maine State Police primarily regulate and enforce the transportation of hazardous materials within the state.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is the lead agency in developing and administering the hazardous waste management program within Maine.
