The State of Indiana has adopted and enforces the federal Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR), Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), including Part 107, Subparts F and G; Parts 171-173; Part 177; Part 178; and Part 180, as well as Part 397 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. Shippers and carriers engaged in both interstate and intrastate commerce must comply with the applicable hazardous materials transportation requirements.

The Indiana State Police (ISP), through its Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, exercises regulatory and enforcement authority over the transportation of hazardous materials within the state.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), Office of Land Quality (OLQ), is the lead agency responsible for administering Indiana's hazardous waste management program.
